The Lusaka City Council – LCC has made good progress with excavation works, concrete lining and installation of culverts in flood-prone areas in Kamwala South.
The Zambia National Service – ZNS was contracted to carry out the construction assignment and is targeting to complete the works by 31st December 2023 as a mitigation measure to prevent floods that are problematic in the area during the rainy season.
The Local Authority received funding of K2.7 Million from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit – DMMU to facilitate the construction of drains in Kamwala South.
The drain works will cover a total stretch of 1.8 Kilometres that includes 600 Metres of drainage at Paul Ngozi road that will be used as a runoff for feeder drains being constructed along Sodium, Lithium and Zipas drains and it will discharge into the Bombay drainage.
Meanwhile, in the Foxdale area off Mutumbi road, 200 Metres of concrete lining has already been done out of 900 Metres that are expected to be done before the completion of drain works.
The contractor Mount Olive Company is also scheduled to complete the works by 31st December 2023.
The excavation works, concrete lining and the installation of culverts in the Foxdale area are being done with funding of K2.4 Million from the Ministry of Local Government And Rural Development.
The Local Authority is working tirelessly to ensure that it sources more funds for the construction of drainages in flood-prone areas in the City.
We would therefore like to urge all residents in Lusaka to desist from indiscriminate disposal of waste which is one of the major causes of blocked drains in the City.
