Local authorities from across Zambia came together last night in Lusaka to recognise and celebrate outstanding service delivery, innovation, and leadership. The event, hosted by the Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ), honoured councils and individual leaders making a significant impact in their communities.
The gala dinner was held as part of the 69th LGAZ Annual Conference and the 22nd AMICAALL General Assembly, under the theme βInnovative Municipal Financing and Service Delivery: Pathways for Sustainable Growth and Inclusive Development.β The evening brought together mayors, council chairpersons, technocrats, cooperating partners and other key stakeholders.
Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Gift Sialubalo, who officiated at the event, applauded the councils for their commitment to driving community transformation. He noted that this yearβs 36 entries, which included 21 submissions from 18 local authorities and 15 from the womenβs category, reflect a growing culture of innovation and excellence.
βThese awards are more than just recognition. They are an opportunity to share best practices and inspire each other,β Hon. Sialubalo said. βLocal authorities are not just administrative units; they are hubs of innovation responding directly to the needs of citizens.β
Top-performing councils were awarded in three categories. Chipata City Council scooped first prize in the City Council category, followed by Lusaka and Kitwe. Solwezi led the Municipal Councils, with Kalulushi and Chililabombwe taking second and third. Among Town Councils, Sinazongwe claimed the top spot, ahead of Mwandi and Nyimba.
The Women in Local Government Awards, presented in partnership with the PMI-WILL Project, recognised outstanding female leaders. Evelyn Phiri from Solwezi Municipal Council took first prize, followed by Cllr. Chota Kanungwe Kanyanyamina of Kanchibiya, Cllr. Angela Kayekesi of Luanshya, Cllr. Doris Dingombi of Manyinga, and Cllr. Sylvia Katongo of Kasama.
Minister Sialubalo acknowledged the critical role of women in strengthening local governance, highlighting their contributions to inclusive planning, accountability, and community mobilisation.
He thanked all participating councils and women leaders, stating that even those who did not win had demonstrated valuable commitment and innovation. He further expressed appreciation to the adjudication panel for their professionalism and dedication throughout the process.
As the night drew to a close, Minister Sialubalo encouraged councils to keep pushing the boundaries of service delivery, reminding attendees that true development begins at the grassroots.
βWhen local government delivers, development becomes real, inclusive, and impactful,β he said.
